First Elm Cutting struck.

Post subject:  First Elm Cutting struck.
I took a branch cutting from a Chinese Elm about 8 weeks ago. I was going to bin it thinking that it wasn't worth the effort. Then curiosity got the better of me and I stripped back some of the bark and dipped it in rooting hormone and stuck it in a small pot in the greenhouse. The soil was kept almost saturated with a drip tray underneath that was kept as a reservoir.
To be honest I was not expecting it to take as it was a crude cutting and I didn't defoliate any leaves.
Suprisingly it has decided that it likes this enviorenment and is producing roots that are starting to protrude from the base of the pot. Question is, what do I do now? for by waiting 30 or so years lol
Will it produce its own leader/s skyward. Its almost like a mini raft. Any advice going forward

If you just let it grow, one shoot will rapidly become dominant. You can shape and build the trunk that you want as you go, as if you simple leave it that one shoot/leader will become a vertical pole. It looks like it will be fine left alone for another year and then make sure there's movement where you want it the following spring. The ones I grow in my allotment I tend to work once a year to make sure they have good trunks low down but are then left to grow to gain girth. Damp conditions are good to get root growth early on but now it will need to be a drier in order to thrive.

Ah Ha! yes Gary...That was my next question...do I now reduce the moisture content as the roots are very fine and thin almost under developed. taking away the water content somewhat may allow them to thicken, harden and develop properly. I'll address this in the morning. I'm attempting the same process with Kojo No Mai also but early days yet.

I shove most cuttings from these in a simple plant pot, just remove the leaves from the bottom couple of inches,to me it seems like about 50-60% strike, as a result i have dozens of them. Then I just stick them in the ground for a year/eighteen months before I start to work on them.
As a result of the quantity i get, i give them away to friends family.

Thing is , I can get just about anything i attempt, to strike.

With one exception, japanese maples!. :202thumbdown:

I have followed guides written by experts, been told many `tricks of the trade`, tried numerous methods, and not a single one has done anything other than lose its leaves and turn into a small stick.

I think with maples you have to use a propogator or plastic bag over the pot to keep the humidity higher and also if they strike do not pot on until the second year. I have had failures if I pot on in the following year even though there appears to be reasonable roots.

I do put plastic bags over the pots for humidity, but still no success. If i think back the number of years i have been attempting to get a single acer cutting to strike, i reckon i have ,easily, tried hundreds of times!. not one, not a single one has struck!.On the plus side, it does mean i have never killed a cutting off by transplanting it too early!.

I didn't cover any of the Acers that rooted, I usually put a dollop of cuttings in for just one or two that root! :oops:

There's another small acer cutting that I put in weeks and weeks ago that grew one more pair of leaves then nothing, I looked yesterday and there's another pair appearing, I think they will die back now though due to the lateness in the year, Hopefully it will start growing better next spring!


Here's a couple more that I just stuck in to various pots back in 2016, I stuck loads of cuttings in many pots but then forgot and used fertiliser and killed them all apart from these two, They come in to leaf each year but only one has put more foliage on since I stuck them in to the compost, The smaller one dropped it's couple of leaves this year, Pretty sure it won't show next spring but the other (Slightly bigger) one I think will, It's strange how they don't grow though, I get the feeling that if I pulled them both, There would be nor roots!! :132doh:

Years ago I put two trays of Deshojo cutting in to trays (12 in each), Only one rooted, I still have it today but it died back years ago to the bottom two branches!

I thinned it out a bit last year and wrapped a bit of wire on it..
