i would cut the roots off above
the red line and keep the kink in the trunk as over time it will look great :)

If I'm reading correctly I'm with Gary on this. Take the bottom third or half , give it a couple of years untouched and then take more if healthy. With collected trees I find a big percentage of cat litter/ small molar clay seems to work well producing new fine roots. Maybe it's due to the water content. Good luck.

My biggest fear for this was that it would not bud out at all. That seems to be happily resolved.

Now I want it to put on a load of leaves and send out a load of new roots. It is in pure fine (cat litter,) molar clay so by the end of the summer if it lives it will probably fill that pot with roots.
