Back in 2017, I collected this odd little Hawthorn sapling that was growing on a railway embankment being cleared. It seemed like the embankment was eroding away, and this had left the sapling growing from two exposed roots of equal size. The roots lead to a single trunk that then splits into two equal-sized trunks again. These images are from Apr and Aug 2018:

All I've done since is keep the tree alive, but in the same pot. It's now about 80cm high with roughly 8cm root to single trunk, then another 7-8cm to the point the trunk splits.

Here it is today, but from the other side:

Here's the only photo I found of anything with a similar exposed 2-root-to-single-trunk style: https://www.tokopedia.com/djatikarya/bo ... yle-bunjin

Any ideas/suggestions, of where this tree might go, and the first steps to take?

Hi

It is very skinny at the moment, which means it is much too tall.

What are your ambitions for this tree? do you want an 90cm tall tree or are you prepared to shorten it to shohin or mame size.

If it was mine, I would cut it above the root keeping the bit of growth, find a piece of rock that would fit between the root, and bind the root tightly witth polythene strip (cut from a carrier bag) and train it as root over rock.

My tuppence worth.

Thanks Keith - great questions!

I was under the impression that root over rock would be very challenging at this stage with the 2 roots already being very firmly set in position, but it's definitely one for me to think about, and keep an eye out for suitable rocks.

I'm fine with any ideas really. If tall, then it would probably end up an odd 2-root literati, but I'm also happy with much shorter styles.
I guess the one thing I'm keen to do is make the most of its unusual feature rather than try to turn it into something I could work any old hawthorn sapling into, if that makes sense.

Ben,
Take a look at this, my friend styled her tree with a base similar to yours....... https://swindon-bonsai.co.uk/2020/04/28 ... -did-next/

Thanks Paul - that's a quirky idea. Searching for "Ent bonsai" turns up quite a few, but your friend's is one of the better ones :smallthumb:
I wonder what the "final image" might be for this idea?

Possibly lay it over on it's side for a fallen tree image. Chopping to the first set of foliage like Keith says and developing from there.

Hmmm. That's a definite possibility. I was at Greenwood today and saw this, which might be a possibility along those lines:

I have a feeling that's one of Smithy's old trees? :thum:

That's a cracking tree. Not a bad bit of rock either come to that!
