I once remember saying "I only want a few trees to decorate a pond area".....
People, just forget everything I said :07hysterical:

I should have listened, but hey it has opened lots of doors to new friendships and acquaintances and a diversity of other Bonsai-related topics, I wouldn't go back. The only problem now is Real Estate and a Bonsai Widow hahahahaha.

What's you collection count now then? I've heard it said a few times that 20-30 trees is about the right amount for a typical hobbyist.

After my drastic cutting-down of tree numbers, I now have only 63.

I have far too many (300+ about half in the ground - in my allotment or garden) but I can't bring myself to get rid of them. I haven't added any for a few years (but they keep growing and getting bigger and not many die now, so it seems they just take up more and more space). I might just give some of them away at some point.

What's too many?? I suppose when when it is not possible to maintain what you have and when it stops you enjoying what you have. I have about 20 in a display area and probably 80 in various stages of growth. I also have time , which I enjoy spending on the trees. I actually enjoy propogating young trees and using all the skills available to improve these trees to set them in a good position to grow into a bonsai tree . I sold a few last year, at very fair prices compared to a lot of crap I see, and this will help to pay for my hobby and hopefully start some others down the route of enjoying bonsai trees like rivulus. I am sure that everyone gets something different from this hobby.

I also have too many, but only because I don't have enough spare time. At the last count, I have:
40 in bonsai pots (too many)
28 trees thickening in bigger garden pots - a manageable number because they don't need much work.
95 seedlings and cuttings (too many)

It's time I started selling some for a reasonable price, like you said Richard, partly to justify the purchases but mainly to clear an ounce of space on the benches.
I have given some away to friends and relatives which is great, people seem to really appreciate pretty cuttings and it also gets rid of old pots! But in the last year we haven't had many visits with the wider family & friends, for obvious reasons.
