John - you'll need to prune your JBP to stimulate inner bud growth (you might get some from the candle reduction you've done) and then chase the foliage back in in coming years. They are vigorous enough as trees so it shouldn't be be a problem. I would also move it into a much more free draining soil and fertilise heavily.

With JBP unless it's weak you can de-candle completely leaving just a few mm of new growth. The response should be multiple shoots around the cut site and some further back in is also common. The alternative is to let the candles extend and harden and then prune back hard within the new growth - again resulting in new shoots or buds for the next year if done later.

Some of the above comments seem to refer to European Black Pine, which is very different to Japanese Black Pine in growth and habit.
I think Johnbaz's tree is European Black?

Just my thoughts

Yes - my comments refer to Japanese Black Pines. If John's tree is EBP it may well require a different approach.

Thanks people :smallthumb:

I honestly don't know what type it is, I can't even recall where I acquired it, I've had it so long in a corner of the garden or other, Most likely won at the club auction!, I can only recall that i've a vague memory that it was a Black Pine, The needles are like spears and stab me when I go near it!! ::OMG:

Cheers, John :Big Thumb:

Just a quick update,

Looking back, dunno why i was so concerned as the 2nd flush seems to have exploded all over the tree lol, with new candles growing at a super fast rate all over the tree, guess the weather lately has helped immensely

Cheers
Sean

WOW!

That's great Sean!

The one I have has just produced a few more candles, I was shocked when I saw them as I thought it was a single flush pine!!
